Lately, we've noticed a trend toward optimism in the marketing world. There's a sense of "the-underdog-can-do-it"  in ads like Maserati's Super Bowl commercial and an energetic American patriotism coming from GM's Cadillac.  As in the early 80s, there seems to be a spirit stirring in people, and marketing is beginning to speak to that. At Odd Lamps, we're carrying that idea into some of our early work this election cycle for our political client FreedomWorks for America. Following is a recent spot we created for the US Senate primary in Kentucky.

WASHINGTON, DC – April 5, 2013 – Minneapolis-based creative agency Odd Lamps Productions was honored tonight by the American Association of Political Consultants with two Pollie Awards™ for its video work on campaigns for FreedomWorks for America, a Washington, DC-based superPAC. Widely considered the “Oscars of the political world,” the Pollie Awards honor the best work in the political field over the course of the year.


“Our goal this political cycle was to create amazing work for our clients that garnered not just attention or viral status, but also generated real results. We created over 150 ads last year, and we gave every ad our best effort. Being recognized by the AAPC in our first real break-out season was such an honor, but we know that we’re going to have to work even harder to top this year’s work,” said Odd Lamps CEO and Creative Director Michael Wilson.


The Pollie Awards™ (Pollies) are bipartisan awards received annually by the members of the political communication industry who have demonstrated they are the “best of the best”.  Winners are selected as the “best of the best” in political communications by a blind jury of their peers known as the “Judges”.  Esquire magazine has defined the Pollies as “…the Oscars of political advertising.”


Odd Lamps was honored for Best Independent Expenditure Ad (US Senate) “Laundromat” and for Best Pre-Roll Ad “Carmona the Chameleon.”

New Projects

After a few weeks off after a busy campaign season (I even managed to take my new bride Jamie on a honeymoon a few months late), we're back at it, working on several corporate and political spots. We're even putting together a sizzle reel for my first movie in 8 years (yes, it's been that long).

After those 16-20 hour days for the last few months of the election cycle, it's nice to return to a normal pace (9 to 5? What's that?), and even be able to spend some time with the kids.

 More on the new flick and a couple of TV projects soon.

Odd Lamps Productions founder and CEO Michael Wilson will return to the airwaves on Saturday morning, October 20th on AM 1130 Twin Cities News Talk and from 7-8am and replayed at 10am. Tune in and catch him as he joins Bob Davis, Tom Emmer from the Davis & Emmer Show, Ben Kruse from the Late Debate and Andrew Lee, as they not only discuss but solve the issues of the day and generally crack wise.

Another busy week here at OLP. We finally got the new site up and running. It's still a bit rough around the edges, as we work out the small technical things and fill it out a little more after the big election. But it's live and the platform it's built on will allow us to stay in contact with clients and friends a little more than the old site we suffered with. 

Since returning from Ohio, we've finished 9 spots, with 2 more almost done and another to be created by Monday, for a total of 12. That's serious volume, and everything is working. There are only a few weeks left of this election cycle. I'll have a lot to say when we're done, but we've all learned a lot. From a business perspective, it's been a learning experience. One of the things I've always touted with clients is that we're scalable. Sometimes we're a one-man band, and sometimes we bring in a bunch of people to get the job done. In a very short amount of time, we were able to expand the operation and fulfill a level of volume that surprised even me, without ever sacrificing quality. I'm proud of that.

We've had a lot of late nights, and some weird ideas. A few of them have come to fruition. I'm heading to bed, but I'll leave you with one of the weirdest and funniest pieces we've made. It's currently making the rounds in Arizona, and it's unlike most of the political spots you've seen. One of the best things about Taking The Senate with FreedomWorks For America is that they've trusted us to take a few chances and do things differently. Here's "Carmona Chameleon."

Taking The Senate With FreedomWorks

It's been a crazy month six weeks here at OLP. In August, we entered into an exclusive engagement with FreedomWorks For America to handle their Take The Senate campaign. Since then, we've cranked out almost 40 ads for US Senate races in 8 states, criss-crossed Ohio, and have consumed about 42,459 gallons of coffee. Special thanks to Keurig for keeping us awake!

This engagement is the biggest yet for our small company, and it has been an honor to be involved in such an important election campaign with the best grassroots organization out there. When the dust settles in November, we will have created over 70 web and broadcast ads, with over 50 million impressions. It's good stuff, and we're proud of the work we're doing. So far, our favorite spot is "Senator Space Cadet" an animation featuring that wacky Senator from Florida, Bill Nelson. People seem to dig it. 

Special thanks to our staff and contractors who have made this engagement as bump-free as possible, especially Tom McGovern, who has the job of digging through hundreds of hours of footage to find those gems we incorporate into our work. More soon, but for now, here's Senator Space Cadet...
